东亚民族之一。即日本人，主要分布在日本。由通古斯人、马来人、汉人和朝鲜人等长期融合而成。西元前二世纪始受中国文化影响，后建立大和国，遂有大和民族之称。历经大化革新、明治维新，融合东西方文化，进入资本主义社会。操日语，属阿尔泰语系，文字以汉字和假名混合使用，后又大量引进西方外来语。信仰佛教和神道教，民族服装为和服。
